Description

Your mix sounds almost right, but the midrange feels congested and the sides lack air. Digital mid/side gets you part of the way, until the phase is just slightly off. The Audiowerkzeug STEREO2MidSide is a passive M/S matrix that does the conversion entirely in transformers, with no power and no latency. Patch it into your insert and process mid and side separately with the analog gear already in your rack.

Inside are double magnetically shielded transformers that split your L/R signal into mid and side, and fold it back with one push of a button. The fully balanced XLR inputs and outputs at 600 ohms keep hookup simple, even in an existing mastering chain. Two ground-lift switches kill hum-inducing ground loops instantly. No active electronics in the path, so no noise or coloration you didn't ask for.

Key features

  • Fully passive: no power supply, no adapter, no latency. Connect and play.
  • One push-button switches between encoding (L/R to M/S) and decoding (M/S to L/R), so one unit covers your whole workflow.
  • Ground-lift on both input and output, handy when your gear runs across different power circuits.
  • Double-shielded transformers keep dimmers, power supplies, and other hum sources out of your signal.
  • Handles up to 29 dBu at 1 kHz, so a hot master bus won't faze it.
  • Compact 10 x 10 cm block that fits on your meter bridge just as well as in your flight case.
  • Equally suited to on-location M/S mic technique and studio mastering.
  • Wide-bandwidth studio transformers: overdrive it and you get harmonic distortion instead of hard clipping.
  • Elliptical low-end filtering keeps your bass centered automatically, handy if vinyl is coming out of this.
  • Hand-built in Germany, in a classic, no-nonsense design.

Ideal for

  • Mastering engineers who want to EQ or compress mid and side separately
  • Studios recording with M/S mic technique
  • Broadcast and mobile recording where there's no free outlet
  • Producers who want to shape stereo width in the analog domain
  • Sound designers working with spatial information

Perfect with

  • Analog EQs and compressors with balanced XLR I/O
  • Mastering chains between your DA and AD converter
  • M/S mic sets with a cardioid and a figure-eight
  • The insert loop of an analog console or summing mixer

Pro Tip: anything you push into the side channel disappears the moment someone listens to your mix in mono. Always check in mono before you dial the width open further.

FAQ

Does this unit need power?

No. Conversion happens entirely through transformers, so no power supply or adapter is involved.

Can I convert M/S back to stereo too?

Yes. The push-button reverses the coding direction, so the same unit both encodes and decodes.

Do I lose level through the transformers?

Barely, with a high-impedance load (-0.06 dB). Load it with 150 ohms and expect -3.6 dB, plus a bit of make-up gain downstream.
